Frigates are plentiful on the Island compering with or stealing fish from the Boobies. Ironwood trees make up most of the vegetation on the island.

Identifiable by the red throat pouch.

The female has a red ring around the eye.

The lady doesn't appear to be interested...


A great frigate tries to steal fish from a Masked Booby.

The Brown Booby lays 2 eggs, The first hatched chick usually, but not always, destroys the other egg.

This little fellow got rid of the other egg.

The males have a distinctive blue-gray beak.

This lady doesn't seem all that interested either...

The Boobies on the island are fearless. This one chased me off!

No more than an hour old....

The chicks outgrow the parents in a few weeks...

Thank God we didn't have two...







White terns lay eggs in precarious locations on a tree branch or on a stairway banister. The hatched chick stays in that spot until fledged.


Demolition workers set this White Tern chick back in the same location after the building was removed. The parents continued to feed it until it fledged.

Parrot fish feed on dead coral and discharge fine sand-like particles. A single Parrot fish makes about 870 lbs of "sand" a year.


The Wedge-tailed Shearwater nests in burrows like Puffins. This mother and chick are being evaluated by Fish and Wildlife personnel.



An Immigrant. Probably a stowaway on a ship from the mainland.

Located on the north shore. The Frigates roost there at night. Latecomers circle around try to find one that can be knocked off its perch...
