The Ratatatok area is a prime destination for scuba diving due to the extensive coral formations and the variety of fish, including the butterfly fish, that live there.. Local bombing and cyanide poisoning fishing practices have caused extensive damage to the reefs, but some restoration techniques are reportedly underway. About 85% of the population of Northern Sulawesi is of the Muslim faith, about 0.7% are Christian. According to Wikipedia, the very North-East tip of Sulawesi has a Christian population of about 68%, mostly Protestant, which was evident in Ratatatok.

Local miners use mercury to extract gold by forming an amalgam. Lack of controls caused mercury poisoning.


Gold ore was mined using open pit methods


This part of the plant removed mercury from the roaster gases usedo to oxidize the crushed gold ore before leaching to remove the precious metals. The liquids in the tanks had to be treated and disposed of before demolition.


The tank was used to settle precipitates from the water treatment

Air emissions were monitored to ensure compliance with local standards.
